Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about getting started with Literacy Leap.

Literacy Leap is designed for students who are still building the foundational reading skills covered in grades Kโ€“4. The platform starts with simple three-letter words and builds all the way up to multisyllabic words, prefixes, and suffixes. Because it is skill-based rather than age-based, it works well for any learner who is still developing phonics skills, regardless of their age.

Literacy Leap is designed to be used together, with a caring adult guiding a child through each lesson. The adult navigates the platform and uses the built-in teaching scripts to deliver instruction, while the student learns through hands-on activities, chooses their own story topics, and brings their own interests and personality to every lesson.

We recommend completing a couple of lessons per week and using the Practice Reading feature regularly in between. Each lesson is designed to take about 20 to 25 minutes, making it easy to fit into a weekly routine. Every child's learning journey is different, so the most important thing is finding a rhythm that works for you and your student.

Yes! When your student has completed all of the lessons in their skills path, it is time to give the assessment again and their path will reset based on what they are ready to strengthen next. Outside of that, the assessment is simply a starting point that helps the platform build your student's personalized learning plan and is not something you need to revisit often.

We use AI to generate decodable texts, wordlists, and sentences. This allows Literacy Leap to meet each learner exactly where they are, personalizing every activity to their specific phonics skill needs and their unique interests. Rather than one-size-fits-all materials, students read and practice with content built around their own ideas, which builds both reading confidence and a genuine love of reading.

Literacy Leap is built to align with the Orton-Gillingham (OG) method, a structured approach to literacy instruction proven through decades of research to be highly effective at teaching reading and writing skills to all types of learners. The OG method emphasizes diagnosing the specific skill needs of individual learners and building a tailored plan to introduce one new skill at a time, review previously learned material in every lesson, and consistently strengthen previously mastered concepts so that students build the foundation needed to become confident readers and writers.

Decodable texts are carefully written to include only phonics patterns a student has already learned and to target the specific skills they are currently practicing. Because every word on the page is within reach, students are not guessing or struggling with patterns they have not been taught yet. This builds reading fluency and confidence, and helps students develop a genuine love of reading by experiencing what it feels like to read independently and with ease.
