Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how Chronicle LLC, dba Decodable Reads (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and shares information through Decodable Reads, our platform at decodablereads.com. Decodable Reads helps educators create custom decodable reading materials and practice activities for their students.
This policy applies only to the Decodable Reads platform. We also operate Literacy Leap, which is covered by its own privacy policy at decodablereads.com/literacy-leap/privacy-policy.

Information We Collect
Decodable Reads accounts are for educators. Whether you use Decodable Reads as an individual subscriber or through an organization partner, you are the account holder.
Educators create student profiles and can give students access to a student portal, where students use some features directly. In this policy, “student” means a child whose profile an educator creates in Decodable Reads. The information we collect about students is described in “About Students” below.
About You
What we collect about you depends on how you access Decodable Reads. Find your access type below for a complete list.
Individual Subscribers
Information you give us
- Name and email address, if you sign up with an email address and password
- Payment information, entered through our payment processor, Stripe
- Onboarding survey responses, such as your role in education and how you found us
- Marketing preferences and consent records
- Support messages you send us
Information we receive from others
- Name, email address, and profile image URL from Google, if you sign in with Google
Information generated as you use Decodable Reads
- Story topics, writing activity topics, and requests you enter, and the reading content, quizzes, lessons and other materials generated or revised from them
- Login timestamps, login frequency, and number of unique login days
- Number of decodable stories, lessons, and writing activities generated
- Product interaction and analytics events, subject to the limits described in “Data Sharing”
- Web cookies and browser session data
Organization Accounts
Information you give us
- Name and email address, if you sign up with an email address and password
- Onboarding survey responses, such as your role in education and how you found us
- Marketing preferences and consent records

Information we receive from others
- Name, email address, and profile image URL from Google, if you sign in with Google

We do not collect payment information from organization account holders. Your organization pays for your access outside of Decodable Reads.
About Students
We collect only the following information about each student.
When you create a student profile
- Student name (a first name or alias is fine)
- Student username, which the student uses to sign in to the student portal
- Skills you select for the student
When you create materials for a student
- Decodable texts, writing activities, and lessons you save to the student’s profile
When a student uses the student portal
Students sign in to the student portal with their username and a classroom code that Decodable Reads generates and you share with them. In the portal, students can use the story generator and writing activity generator directly. We collect:
- Story topics and writing activity topics the student enters
- Stories and writing activities generated for the student
- Sign-in and activity data, such as when the student signs in and which features they use
We do not collect students’ email addresses, grades, dates of birth, or any other information about each student.
How We Use Information
About You
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide Decodable Reads, including authenticating you and generating the instructional materials you request
- Send account emails and, if you opt in, marketing emails, as described in “Emails We Send”
- Maintain, secure, and improve the service
- Create aggregated or de-identified reports about progress, engagement, and usage trends to understand and communicate the effectiveness of Decodable Reads
- Comply with applicable laws and regulations
About Students
We use student information to:
- Provide the student portal and generate stories and writing activities matched to the skills selected for each student
- Allow educators to create and manage their students’ profiles, including creating and saving decodable texts, writing activities, and lessons aligned to each student’s skills
We do not use student information for advertising, marketing, or any purpose unrelated to educational services.
Emails We Send
We send educators emails about their account and orders, such as sign-in and security alerts, billing receipts (individual subscribers), and changes to this policy. These are required to operate your account, so you cannot opt out of them.
If you opt in, we may also send marketing emails, such as teaching tips, free resources, product updates, and special offers. You can opt out at any time by clicking the “unsubscribe” link in any marketing email or by emailing support@decodablereads.com.
We do not send emails to students.
Data Sharing
We do not sell or rent your personal data to third parties. We share data with trusted service providers only as necessary to provide Decodable Reads:
- Stripe processes payments from individual subscribers.
- Auth0 manages email/password and Google sign-in.
- Mailgun sends account emails, marketing emails you opt in to, and support replies.
- Formspree receives support requests and contact forms you submit.
- RudderStack and Supabase collect and store product analytics, subject to the limits described below.
- Anthropic generates and/or revises instructional content, including stories, comprehension quizzes, writing activities, word lists, practice sentences, and other lesson materials, subject to the limits described below.
- Vercel and MongoDB Atlas host the application and store data.
- RB2B / Retention.com identifies business visitors on our marketing pages only, as described below.
We will update this list if we change service providers.
All third-party providers are contractually obligated to protect your data and use it only for specified purposes.
AI Features
Some platform features use artificial intelligence to create instructional content personalized to the skills selected for each student. In creating instructional content, we send Anthropic only the topics and requests educators enter, the story and writing activity topics students enter in the student portal, and the skills selected for the student.
Anything entered in open text boxes for story or writing activity topics, by an educator or a student, is sent to Anthropic exactly as written, including any names or personal details typed.
We do not send any other information about you or your students to Anthropic. Under Anthropic’s commercial terms, the information we send is not used to train Anthropic’s AI models. More detail is in our How We Use AI disclosure.
Analytics
We use RudderStack and Supabase to collect, route, and store product interaction events, such as pages viewed, buttons clicked, feature usage, session metadata, and anonymous or pseudonymous identifiers. We use these analytics only to operate, secure, and improve the service. We do not intentionally transmit student names, student usernames, classroom codes, or student topics to these analytics services.
Aggregated and De-identified Data
We may share aggregated or de-identified usage data in marketing materials, grant reports, sales materials, case studies, or public communications to show how Decodable Reads is used and how effective it is. This information will not identify individual users, students, schools, families, or institutions unless we have appropriate permission.
Marketing Visitor Identification
On our public marketing pages only, we use RB2B / Retention.com to identify business visitors so our team can follow up about our products. It never runs inside Decodable Reads, including the student portal, and is never used to identify students. Visitors outside the United States are asked to consent first. To opt out, decline on the consent banner or email support@decodablereads.com.
Children’s Privacy and COPPA Compliance
Decodable Reads is designed for educators to create student profiles and provide personalized reading practice. Students, including children under 13, may use the student portal, where they can enter story and writing activity topics. We collect information directly from students only after an educator has created the student’s profile and provided access, and only to provide the educational service.
This section describes our practices in compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), 15 U.S.C. §§ 6501–6506.
The information we collect about students, and how we use it, is described in the “About Students” parts of “Information We Collect” and “How We Use Information.”
Educator Responsibilities
Educators must:
- Confirm that the student’s parent or legal guardian has authorized the student’s use of Decodable Reads or that they are acting on behalf of a school or organization that has authorized it
- Share student usernames and classroom codes only with their own students
- Supervise student use of the student portal as appropriate
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws, including COPPA and FERPA
Where permitted by COPPA, schools may consent to the collection of student information on behalf of parents when Decodable Reads is used for an educational purpose.
Parent and Guardian Rights (COPPA)
If your child’s information has been entered into Decodable Reads, you have the right to:
- Review the personal information we have collected about your child
- Correct inaccurate information about your child
- Delete all personal information about your child
- Refuse further collection of information about your child, which requires removing the student from Decodable Reads
To exercise these rights, email support@decodablereads.com with the subject line “COPPA Parent Request” and include the name of your child’s educator or school. We will respond within 30 days.
Data Retention and Deletion
We retain your personal data while your account is active, as long as needed to provide our services, and as required by law (typically 7 years for financial records). Marketing consent records are kept to demonstrate compliance with marketing laws.
Student data is retained only while the associated educator account is active.
Deleting a single student: When you delete a student profile, we delete that student’s profile and all associated information, including the student’s username, selected skills, topics, and generated content, from our active database. Your account and any other student profiles are not affected.
Deleting Your Account
To delete all data associated with your account, email support@decodablereads.com with the subject line “Account Deletion Request.” We will complete your request within 30 days. When deletion is complete, your account and the student data associated with it are deleted from the active database, unless a longer retention period is required by law.
Your Rights
Depending on your location, you have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Correct inaccurate data
- Delete your data (“right to be forgotten”)
- Export your data in a portable format
- Object to data processing
- Withdraw marketing consent at any time
- Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority

International Data Transfers
Chronicle LLC operates in the United States. If you access Decodable Reads from outside the United States, your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your region. By using our services, you consent to this transfer. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your data in compliance with applicable laws.
Updates to This Privacy Policy
We will notify users of updates to this Privacy Policy by email and will update the “Last Updated” date at the top of this policy when changes are made.
